Snowflake Cortex Analyst is a natural-language-to-SQL engine built into the Snowflake platform. Users define semantic views — structured metadata describing tables, columns, metrics, and relationships — and Cortex Analyst uses them to convert questions into SQL. In early 2026, Snowflake launched Semantic View Autopilot, which auto-generates these semantic views from query history, metadata, and BI tool files (Tableau, Power BI), cutting setup from days to minutes.
Where Cortex Analyst Falls Short
- Snowflake only. Cortex Analyst queries data in Snowflake. If your data lives in SQL Server, Oracle, or PostgreSQL, it cannot reach it. You must first load everything into Snowflake.
- Cloud only. Snowflake is a cloud-native platform with no on-premises option. For regulated industries that require data sovereignty and on-prem deployment, this is a fundamental constraint.
- Consumption-based costs. Snowflake charges by compute credits. Every Cortex Analyst query consumes credits. As adoption grows, so does spend — and Cortex queries use LLM inference on top of warehouse compute, compounding costs.
- Manual semantic views (until Autopilot). Before Autopilot, semantic views required manual DDL authoring. Autopilot significantly reduces this effort but still requires curation and review, and it only works with data already in Snowflake.
