What Is Databricks Genie?

Databricks launched Genie One in June 2026 as an “agentic coworker” that lets business teams search and interact with data using natural language. At its core is Genie Ontology, a context layer that continuously learns business meaning from data assets, queries, and connected apps — then uses that context to ground AI-generated SQL. It also includes Genie Agents (reusable saved workflows) and Genie App Builder (vibe-coded business apps).

Where Genie Falls Short for Most Enterprises

• Databricks only. Genie works exclusively on data stored in Databricks (Unity Catalog, Delta Lake). If your data lives in SQL Server, Oracle, Snowflake, PostgreSQL, or flat files, Genie cannot reach it. For organizations with multi-platform data estates — which is most enterprises — Genie covers only the Databricks slice.
• Cloud only. Genie runs in the Databricks cloud. There is no on-premises deployment option. For regulated industries (banking, healthcare, government) that require data to stay within their own perimeter, this is a non-starter.
• Migration required. To use Genie, you must first migrate your data into Databricks. That means an ETL pipeline, a Unity Catalog setup, and ongoing platform costs — before you ask a single question.
• Consumption-based pricing. Genie uses Databricks' DBU consumption model. More questions = more spend. There is no seat-based pricing that stays flat as usage grows.
